Shelley Jordan Memorial Conference Scholarship Application

History

The Shelley Jordan Memorial Conference Scholarship is offered in memory of longtime TxODA member Shelley Jordan who lost her life in May of 2014.

Shelley was born on February 13, 1952, in Lubbock, Texas and graduated from Coronado High School in 1970. She married Danny Jordan in 1971. She worked as a Cancer Registrar for 20 years and to many in the cancer registry was a friend and mentor. She is remembered for her creativity and artistic abilities and how she loved to entertain friends and family, and the Chinese Christmases she hosted were always highlighted by the elaborate arts and crafts she had created. She loved animals and always had a place for them in her heart as well as in her home. Shelley was humble and always willing to help others, whether it was with a project or with advice on cancer treatment. She is missed by so many.

Purpose

Provide financial support to a TxODA member(s) with no available funding to attend TxODA’s Annual Educational Conference.

Award

The scholarship covers the conference registration fee. The recipient may request funding for transportation or lodging costs. Total funding will be limited to actual expenses and will not exceed $500 including registration and all fees. Receipts must be provided for covered expenses. Scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply again for five years.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be active TxODA members in good standing for at least one continuous year AND during the year in which the scholarship is awarded. Applicants must not have received another TxODA scholarship in the same calendar year.
  • Members of the TxODA Board of Directors or Education Committee are not eligible. Associate, Inactive and Student members are not eligible to apply.
  • The scholarship recipient will not be eligible to apply again for five years. The TxODA Executive Committee will maintain a listing of all scholarship awardees and will provide a listing of all previous scholarship winners to the Education Committee.

Process

Applicants must complete the application form and submit a 500 to 750-word essay on the topic. One scholarship recipient will be chosen.

Discuss the significance of attending an in-person educational conference as a means of networking with fellow cancer registry professionals. TxODA encourages you to include examples of the advantages you seek to gain from networking at our annual educational conference.

Criteria

The essay will be scored by TxODA’s Education Committee using the following criteria:

  • Adherence to the topic
  • Use of original ideas and/or concepts
  • Coherence and completeness (If application information is missing or unclear, no points will be awarded in this category.)
  • Compliance with the format (see below)
  • Additional points may be awarded by the committee if the applicant has never attended a TxODA Annual Educational Conference
